I’m NOT in the art show at Celebration V

Writing by Spencer on Thursday, 17 of June , 2010 at 10:16 am

I am taking a bit of a leap, but here it goes.  I have been invited to create my third officially licensed Lucasfilm art print.  It will be available at the Star Wars Celebration V in Orlando Florida.  The convention will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back August the 12th-15.  This print will be 12″ x 24″ matching my previous prints and will thematically fit to complete the series.

Now that I’ve said that I’ve been invited to the show I have to explain what I mean by the title of this post.  I have decided to move out of the art show and take up a booth space at the convention.  I will be at a corner booth across from the Jedi Stage next to Matt BuschThe Art of Ralph McQuarrieTsuneo SandaTom Hodges and right down the way from LEGO!  I’m not sure where they will all be set up, but my friends Jason Palmer,  Monte Moore, and Dave Dorman will be also be out on the exhibitors floor.  (I hope I haven’t missed anyone).  You can see a fantastic interactive map from the Star Wars Celebration site.

I currently have 2 extra exhibitors badges for the show and some fabulous hotel arrangements.  If you are interested in working at my booth or would like to sponsor me please use the contact button on my website to send me a message. I would hate to see the badges go unused.

Shopping for Exclusive Items

This is WonderCon wrap-up post #2
With my first trip to WonderCon last year, I also had my first trip to Lucasfilm and ILM.  We had a great lunch and look around the place, but I didn’t schedule my trip very good and didn’t have much time for a tour.  So this year I contacted my friends and set up a nice leisurely tour around the place.  I’ll have to double check and see what photos and videos that I’m allowed to post, but it was pretty fun!  One of the highlights is to see some of the actual movie props like this Stormtrooper costume.

The other thing that I really enjoyed was being able to pick up some items from the Lucasfilm store.  Along with the clearance copy of Lego Indiana Jones, I was able to by some crew gear.  These are items that are made for, and available to the folks who are working on the different projects at Lucasfilm and ILM.

The last items I was able to pick up was not at the store at all.  Last year I customized a Mighty Muggs toy for a charity auction.  StarWars.com made up some t-shirts for the participants and I finally got mine!  Thanks Pete, Bonnie, and Matt for hanging out before the show!

Holy Eco-Friendly Soap!

Writing by Spencer on Tuesday, 13 of April , 2010 at 9:49 am

This is WonderCon wrap-up post #1.
Normally with my convention visits I try to arrange to stay with a fellow artist (or three) in one hotel room to save some money.  Last year was my first trip to the San Francisco convention.  It was a last minute decision to tag along with Matt Busch, Paul Michael Kane, Randy Martinez and Denise Vasquez.  We all stayed in one room and it got so loud from the snoring that Matt tried to get away and sleep in the bathtub!  Sorry Matt!

This year I struck out on my own and at the suggestion of my friend Otto Dieffenbach, I stayed at the Mosser Hotel and really loved it.  It’s a block or so to the convention center, in the middle of some great restaurants, and I didn’t have to worry about walking back late at night through the high crime Tenderloin neighborhood like we did last year.

One of the things that I really liked about the Mosser (besides the price) was that they were active about saving money too.  When I first walked onto my floor I saw a sign for a bathroom and a shower in the hallway and I started to wonder if I had booked a room in a hostel and would find myself waiting in line to use the toilet.  Fortunately, my neatly designed but tiny room had it’s own toilet and shower.  There was a note on the bed suggesting that I save water by not having my sheets washed every day.  Another note prompted me to reuse my towel and leave the dirty ones on the floor.  But the best cost saving device of them all was the soap.

The first thing I noticed was the HOLE in the box.  I laughed out loud remembering that I’d seen some silly invention for a hollow bar of soap that eliminated all those little bits and pieces of soap you get when its wearing down.  So I called my wife to tell her about the soap and about the joke soap I’d seen before.  Then I opened it and read the back of the box.

Here’s what it says on the box, “This innovative ergonomically shaped “waste reducing” soap has been designed to eliminate the unused center of traditional soap bars.”  Fantastic!  I’ll be staying at the Mosser again!

One of my friends over at the RebelScum forums just pointed out the connections between the Star Wars Celebration V (tee hee), Orlando Florida, the 30th anniversary of The Empire Strikes Back, and then I added Orlando Bloom to the mix to create the photoshop masterpiece below.

Writing by Spencer on Friday, 6 of November , 2009 at 11:10 am

My wonderful friends over at Mint in Box came all the way from France for the Fan Days III show in Plano Texas.  They just uploaded a ton of photos by Michel Verpoorten who has just published a wonderful book of his convention photos.  We’re going to have to figure out how to get the book over here in the US.  You can see more photos of me and the other artists here.

I’m Doing a Show in Vegas!

Writing by Spencer on Thursday, 5 of November , 2009 at 9:03 pm

My good friends over at World Famous Comics and Ronin Spoon have invited me to come out to the Las Vegas Comic Book Festival on November 7th.  It’s just a one day event that’s part of library book week for the county library system, but it’s a good excuse to be out meeting up with friends.  I’m totally looking forward to the event as well and the post festival festivities known as Cowboy Town!  (art guns for hire!)

Here’s some more samples of the product that I will have on hand, soon to be available from Zazzle.

At Fan Days III I had a post card size of the “Jabba’s Girls” illustration and sold out of all 25 cards.  So I bumped them up to the larger Greeting card size and will have post cards of “Uh Oh Oola” and the Boba Fett illustration “Brothers”.  See the size comparison image below.

no blasters, NO BLASTER!!!

Writing by Spencer on Thursday, 24 of September , 2009 at 9:42 am

Last year at the Star Wars Fan Days II convention in Plano Texas I made a give-away print to show my appreciation for being invited to attend the show.  It’s an 8.5″x5.5″ Jumbo postcard with some of my original art on it.  I only made 100 of them, and seeing how they’ve invited me back again, I HAD to do a new one.  The convention is Oct. 24-25th and I’m going to be giving these away there.  If anyone would like to commission some art to be picked up at the convention, send me an email and tell me what you’re interested in.
