Back From The Dead!

Writing by Spencer on Wednesday, 10 of June , 2009 at 7:30 am

Tuesday, JUNE 20th at the Wembly Arena in London kicks of the ONE NIGHT ONLY WORLD TOUR of SPINAL TAP! heh…hehh….one night only…..world tour…. hheheheh.

1984 Rob Reiner created a fake documentary mock Rockumentary about the fictional band Spinal Tap. Reiner plays the part of filmmaker Marty DiBergi as he chronicles the bands first US tour. The film satirizes the wild personalities and antics of Heavy Metal bands, but then accidentally makes the fake band quite popular. To mark the 25th anniversary of the movie, the actors are staging a “Come Back” World Tour (that will only be held one night). They have a new album with a fold out cover that includes paper dolls of the band. I find myself laughing about this world tour and the whole premiss of the movie, but I don’t remember it being too family friendly.

I checked on the IMBD guide for parents has the following bit of information about this movie;

Some innuendo, some in the form of lyrics. Suggestive scene involving tight trousers. A pickle is found in someone’s pants. 23 F-words. Some S-words. Highly suggestive lyrics.

Lego Rock Band

Writing by Spencer on Monday, 8 of June , 2009 at 3:22 pm

As long as we’re talking about bringing the family together to play a little Beatles Rock Band, why not play a a Lego version of the game?  It looks like they’ve replaced the rock characters with Lego characters and have a more family friendly play list.  You can get some more information at the game site Kotaku.

Director Patrick Boivin

Writing by Spencer on Thursday, 4 of June , 2009 at 3:24 pm

My friend Nick Cordileone sent me a the following link through Facebook of the Transformer Jazz having a battle with the General Lee.

I was super impressed with the camera work in this stop motion animation so I did a little research.  The following is from the website Wolflapin.

“Youtube phenom, Patrick Boivin is a self-taught director who got his start working on a show called Phylactèrecolafor a Quebec broadcaster. He has directed several shorts that have been on the international festival circuit. He has created stop-motion animation videos, some of which have gotten over five million hits. He is wowing everyone on the web with his technical proficiency, but most of all with his very own brand of cheeky pop cultural remixing. Huge music acts have recently hired Patrick.”

I’ve been working to build an online presence to help to advertise my work.  Well, it would appear that in lieu of Patrick building his own website, he’s built a YouTube Channel. He Joined YouTube March 01, 2007 and now has 42,521 subscribers. I’m not sure how this whole model works, but I would assume that when he publishes a new video to YouTube, 42,521 people will get a notification. That’s pretty impressive.  I’m hoping that he’s able to get some revenue sharing from YouTube for the over One Million channel views he’s had.

here’s another video posted on Vimeo (it’s a bit higher quality than YouTube)

Designer Eric Tan

Writing by Spencer on Thursday, 4 of June , 2009 at 11:11 am

I really enjoy the work of Disney designer Eric Tan.  He has created artwork for The Incredibles, Indiana Jones, Wall-E, and recently completed work on the style guide for the new Disney/Pixar movie UP!  He has become well known for his wonderful posters that mix current movies with a retro style.  You can see samples of his work on his Blog or check out this interview on the sci-fi site io9.

As I am working to be a self-employed artist (it’s kinda tough, maybe I’ll add a “Donate” button to my blog :D ) I’m learning more and more about the way that licensing and art collecting works. The collectors want to have a high quality, archival, limited edition print.  Many collectors will buy the art as an investment as well as for a love of the property.  They know that the value of the work will hold true because it they have gone through a reputable dealership and the work is certified.  With all of those requirements comes a price tag because you’re going to get what you pay for.

One of the license holders to create this type of work in Acme Archives Direct.  The image to the right is Russell the Wilderness Explorer and is available from Acme HERE for $145.00.  The print is 13×19 and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.  There are only 150 of these available and they are hand signed and numbered by Eric Tan.  It is a Giclee print on acid-free archival paper (framing is extra).  Giclee (pronounced “zhee-clay”), is a process of making fine art prints from a digital source using ink-jet printing. The word  was coined in 1991 to represent any high quality ink-jet print and is often used in galleries and print shops to denote such prints.  These prints are much more expensive to produce on a “per print” basis than the traditional four color offset lithography process originally used to make such reproductions (a large format inkjet can cost more than $50 a print, not including scanning and color correction, as opposed to $5 a print for a four-color offset litho of the same image printed in a run of 1000).

So if you like the art, and really want to have it, but you’re not that concerned about it being a Limited Edition, Disney has worked out a deal with the on-demand publisher Zazzle.  Click HERE to see the disney gallery.   You start by choosing a character or movie.  Then you choose a product like a t-shirt, mug, stamps, mousepad, or poster.  The posters on Zazzle are $11.20.  Click on the link below to check out these Zazzle products.

*Update:  It would appear that while I have been writing this blog the exact same posters that are on Acme and Zazzle are no longer available from Zazzle.  So the interesting thing about Zazzle is that they also offer the images from the poster as a poster.

The Beatles: Rock band 09.09.09

Writing by Spencer on Wednesday, 3 of June , 2009 at 7:46 am

Here’s some beeee-UTI-ful animation for the new Beatles Rock Band game.  For those who may not be familiar with Rock Band, it’s a video game where players get to simulate the performance of popular rock music songs by playing with controllers modeled after musical instruments.  With the release of the Beatles Album into Rock Band, they are also releasing Beatles styled guitar instruments.  Sigh, I wonder how much this is going to be…
