One of the things that makes tv shows so much fun is when the blur the line with reality. I’m not a fan of reality tv shows, but I like television dramas to be believable. Ok, so Lost is not really all that believable, but it sure is clever. :D

My friend Blake sent me a link yesterday to the “Linchpin Index“. I was a bit taken aback to see my photo on the page, then I was deeply flattered. You see, Blake works for the community website Squidoo which was founded by Seth Godin. On the Squidoo site, users can create their own pages called “lenses” to share their knowledge on all subjects. Seth Godin is, well, he’s a thinker. His views on marketing, media, fans, and platform vs. eyeballs have helped to shape the way I work.
In his new book, “Linchpin: Are You Indispensable?” Seth describes that, “…in the old days, a linchpin was a tiny piece of hardware, very light in weight and low in cost that held the wheel onto the wagon. Without a linchpin the wheel would fall off. It’s the part you can’t live without.
And I use that as a talking point to get me started down this road of talking about how our economy has shifted from 150 or 200 years of industrial compliance in which a workers job is to feed the machine and keep the system running, to a new age which just dawned, a revolution, in which the employees we’re willing to pay, and the people we seek out, and the jobs that we care about, are done by people, not who follow a manual, and do what they’re told, but people who matter, who make a difference, who are linchpins, who we can’t live without.”
I’m thrilled to be listed with people who make a difference. I guess it’s time to get to work!

I’m a big fan of the cancelled tv show Firefly. Early in December I was commissioned to create some sketch cards of the cast of the show. My scan of the final color images didn’t turn out so good, so I put together the black and white drawings to give you a feel for the cards. I’d love to do some prints from this show.

One of the things that I enjoy most about the work I do is making people happy. We’re going down the rabbit hole a bit, but follow me on this one. Back in 2008 at the San Diego Comic Con I got to meet some of the people that I had been communicating with online. One of those people was Justin Chung who runs a site called World Famous Comics. Justin was sitting by Joe Corroney who draws AMAZING covers for Star Wars, Star Trek, and Farscape comics. Through Joe and Justin I met Ed Hawkins and Jeff Wedding who have been involved in comic forever and have started working on a web comic at RoninSpoon Theater with the Fillbach brothers Matt and Shawn who have been working on the Star Wars Adventure comics. WHEW!!!
So Jeff contacted me and said that there was a small event in Las Vegas called the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival. They hadn’t attended the show before but they wanted to check it out and asked if I would come out and be there guest for the show. I was thrilled to fly out to Vegas and hang out with these guys for the show. Ed did a write up of the show here, and I got to meet comic shop owner Ralph Mathieu at the show and he did a great write up here.
After the show we were hanging out and Jeff said that he wanted to get a shadow box from me someday. I showed me one of his vintage Topps R2-D2 cards saying he thought it would be a great shadow box. Well, it turns out that Jeff had been talking to his wife about this idea too. So she contacted me (through Facebook) and commissioned the shadow box. The big trick was to make it without Jeff knowing. So I looked online to try and find the card that Jeff had showed me, but I had no luck. Finally I turned to Gus Lopez, Super Star Wars Collector, and he sent me an image of the card. I made that shadow box and sent it off for a Christmas morning surprise. :D
